Just install the new version.  Within the install, just delete the old
partitions, and re-partition according to your tastes.  The new
distribution will install its own bootloader (either GRUB or LILO, most
likely), overwriting the old one.  You'll then have a fresh install, and
the old bootloader will be gone.
