[svlug] Debian and DHCP (AT&T Broadband)

Hello,

This weekend I was installing a Debian GNU/Linux 2.2r4 (Potato) at home.
Actually I started from 2.2r3, and to my surprise (I didn't exepct it to
be that easy), the Internet connection worked right after installation,
even it being a DHCP setup. I don't remember this being that easy in the
past, so I was happy! :)

Then I upgraded the system to 2.2r4, installed support for kernels 2.4
and etc. (through the 'Net, of course -- apt is our friend). I also
installed kernel 2.4.17.

After the first reboot, however, the Internet connection could never be
established again (it seems the DHCP client times out trying to get a
lease).

Just to make sure it wasn't an issue with ATTBI, I tried to boot
Windows XP on the same system and it was able to get an IP.

Oh, and I also tried to go back to kernel 2.2.19 (the original kernel
installed by Debian), but it didn't help at all.

Does anybody here know how to solve this one?? I don't know the ifupdown
package well enough to understand its dependencies with other packages
(more specifically for this case, the DHCP clients), but I did notice that
ifup/ifdown was provided by netbase in 2.2r3, and now they're part of a
separate package, called ifupdown. Dunno whether that has anything to do
with the problem.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Later,
Ivan
