You're talking about replacing the _running_ kernel image?

The only method I know of is Erik Arjan Hendriks's <hendriks at scyld.com>
"Two-Kernel Monte" technique. Used to be a Scyld. You can read part of
Hendrik's FAQ here:

http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:www.scyld.com/software/monte-2.html+two-kernel+monte&hl=en

and that FAQ's table of contents here:

http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:www.scyld.com/software/monte.html+two-kernel+monte&hl=en

Erik got the idea from the Linux BIOS Project,
http://www.acl.lanl.gov/linuxbios/

He described the technique briefly on the kernel mailing list:
http://web.gnu.walfield.org/mail-archive/linux-kernel/2000-March/3549.html

The technique is implemented in Beowulf2.
