based partially on what Russell sent, and partially on this description

Topic: Federated Identity Management

  Federated Identity Management allows individuals to use the same
  identification to sign on to the networks of more than one enterprise
  in order to conduct transactions.

  Partners in such a system depend on each other to authenticate and vouch
  for their users, without needing to adopt the same tools for directory
  services, security and authentication.

  The Liberty Alliance Project ( http://www.projectliberty.org/ ) is the
  only open body working to address the technical, business, and policy
  challenges surrounding identity and web services.  The Alliance is
  made up of over 150 members representing a variety of industries from
  around the world, maintains an open membership policy, and collaborates
  with other standards bodies.

  LAP's specifications for FIM and web services are built on open protcols,
  are are device and platform agnostic.
