Click on the mailing list button in the sidebar on www.svlug.org, and that
page will bring you to the mailman subscribe page

Nope, this page has long been gone. Also, back then we were still using
majordomo.
You then probably remember the announcement of our switch to mailman, the
fact that it had archives, and the 2 or 3 announcements that Rick Moen did
saying that he also had a web archive of the list.

Uh?
We aren't responsible for other LUG lists.

Just for the record, purging messages from our archive, and regenerating it
takes about 2 days on the svlug box (don't ask), and creates a hole and
small corruption in the current archives for new posts while the master
archive is still being rebuilt, so that's not going to happen.
