Actually it  works just as fast,  with xterm mouse reporting,  clicking with
the mouse on  an xterm sends 5  characters that inform the  program on where
the mouse just clicked

It does, it's just that with mouse  support, button 2 pastes the last buffer
while shift button 2 pastes the X selection. As mentionned earlier, I turned
that feature off after Amy got burned by it.

Yes. It allows you to have several vi programs, and have
/etc/alternatives/vi point to the one you want by default

VA does maintain a distribution based on RH but Svlug ain't VA :-)
Michael chose debian at the time he installed the box, so debian it is :-)
