From rick at linuxmafia.com Fri Apr 1 17:47:06 2022 From: rick at linuxmafia.com (Rick Moen) Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2022 18:47:06 -0700 Subject: [volunteers] (forw) [svlug] lists.svlug.org must be taken down for rebuild Message-ID: <20220402014705.GH3919@linuxmafia.com> ----- Forwarded message from Rick Moen ----- Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2022 18:45:49 -0700 From: Rick Moen To: svlug at lists.svlug.org Subject: [svlug] lists.svlug.org must be taken down for rebuild Organization: If you lived here, you'd be $HOME already. The server running this mailing list (and several others) has been limped along for years on an obsolete beta of GNU Mailman and an obsolete beta of the Exim MTA, and inevitably, problems have been developing, and in particular this Mailman version can be exploited to subscribe fake users and to generate UCE (spam in particular ways. It is not feasible to upgrade in place owing to some questionable maintenance performed earlier, so it's going to be necessary to rebuild (at least) the server's mailign list and MTA subsystems. Therefore, I will be shutting off the SMTP service shortly after this message gets out to subscribers. SVLUG has an out-of-band mailing list to discuss matters like these on _my_ server. Anyone who wishes to participate in regenerating SVLUG's online operations is welcome to join, but please note that it is not a general LUG discussion forum. http://linuxmafia.com/mailman/listinfo/revival About revival Private list for parties' occasional work to preserve and further SVLUG's operations and protect its ability to continue operating. It is also useful in cases when SVLUG's mailing lists are unavailable for whatever reason. This mailing list is not an official SVLUG forum. If all goes well, I or someone else will send out an announcement when/if services get restored. I am _not_ providing any ETA, as I'm as usual overbooked, and didn't plan on handling this on an urgent basis (or, frankly, at all). Be seeing you. (This is _not_ an April Fool's Day matter. This is a serious and real announcement.) -- Rick M.
