As you may be aware, the mitigations we deployed earlier this year for
Meltdown and Spectre were the best available at the time, but were
incomplete. In addition to other changes, we would like to deploy more
complete updates on the host server for svlug.xen.prgmr.com covering
Spectre v2/SP2 now that all the dependencies are available. We are still
not aware of any update for Spectre v1.
These updates requires system reboots. We have allocated up to two hours
after 2018-05-05 04:00:00 UTC for this maintenance window.
You will receive a credit for this downtime based on how long the
service is unavailable. We will send an email to the account primary and
technical contacts when the host server is brought down and when it is
started again.
If this time window does not work for you, we may be able to move your
VPS to a different host server in advance of this window, though
depending on disk size the total downtime for this move may exceed the
downtime from staying on the same host server.
You may want to review the grub configuration file /boot/grub/menu.lst
(typical, used with pv-grub) or grub.cfg (with grub2) in advance of this
reboot to verify it is sane and has a valid default entry. You may also
wish to verify you are still able to log into the management console
https://wiki.prgmr.com/mediawiki/index.php/Management_Console in advance
of the reboot. We will allow 5 minutes for the VPS to shut down from the
time that the shutdown signal is sent before performing an unclean
shutdown. If you are concerned this is not enough time, please contact
us or shut them down yourself 10 minutes prior to the maintenance
window.
We will be rebooting internal systems, including billing and the
management console, during a two hour window beginning 2018-04-29
04:00:00 UTC.
