Normally I have my MUA deliberately disregard the HTML half of 
multipart-alertnative e-mails.  In this case, I had mutt show me the
HTML half using lynx.  Colour tags were still deliberately ignored
(as the uses to which they're generally put in e-mail are horrid and
best excised), but I figured out what you meant anyway.
