When I was much younger I thought that maybe I'd become a recruiter,
because I thought myself fairly good at evaluating SysAdmins. Now,
I still think I'm pretty good at evaluating sysadmins, but my perception
of the recruiter job role has changed; I don't think that being a good
filter is what recruiters are getting paid to do. Honestly,
I'm not sure what recruiters are paid to do.
Ever since then I've kinda been toying with the idea of writing a job
board... one with better search and display capabilities than Craigslist,
but free like craigslist. I've spent some programming time on it but I
don't have much to show for it.
Now, my original goal with writing the thing was to eliminate recruiters,
but looking now, I don't think I'm capable of that, just 'cause I don't
understand what they are paid to do. I /believe/ there is some sort of
feel good or liability value they provide to employers, just 'cause
otherwise their continued presence doesn't seem to make sense- I don't
think they function as good filters. The best of them filter, I think,
for mediocrity; most seem to be little more than a clumsily worded keyword
search in a suit.
