[volunteers] (forw) [Mailman-owner] Uncaught bounce notification

This is one of my occasional FYI (For Your Information) postings.
I am _not_ asking for assistance with problems.

Karen posted (within one post) a set of three jobs, three of which were
clearly generic tech jobs with no Linux/Unix characteristics. That was
politely rejected, as seen in the quoted rejection notice. But now
she's trying to argue "Oh, they're Linux jobs because they're at a
company that runs Linux servers; trust me." Also, she can't be bothered
to read the listinfo page I'd already referred her to. And she wants
reassurance that she'll be reaching "other Linux user groups in [the]
Bay Area."

I like recruiters. Sometimes I really need them. But, man, a minority
of them will drive you crazy. And I'm quite certain that about half
of all the ones we encounter have no idea what a mailing list is,
judging by the Jobs list postings that start out by asking help "posting
this job to your site" (or "board").

No, I am not suggesting we need to improve or change our policy. Some
problems are just because people are contrary, and this seems to be one
of them.

Thank you, appreciate it.........I assume posting here will also be seen by
other linux user groups in bay area (bay area, east bay, SF?).
These positions are all for same company on linux server in SF proper so all
linux-centric in that regard. Also a UI designer but I left that one off.

Warmest regards,

Karen [Name, title, tel., e-mail, and affiliations snipped.

Your request to the volunteers mailing list

Posting of your message titled "Post Linux Server Engineer position to
your user group? How?"

has been rejected by the list moderator. The moderator gave the following
reason for rejecting your request:

"Hi, Karen. Wrong mailing list. You'll want to consider the "jobs" mailing
list. See: http://lists.svlug.org/lists/listinfo/jobs

You'll also need to modify the job description to specify the city. Just "SF
Bay Area" isn't specific enough.

Also, each job described must meet the criteria on
http://lists.svlug.org/lists/listinfo/jobs , specifically the one
about jobs needing to be Unix- or Linux-centric. The "Python Web
Developer" and "Senior Actionscript/Flash Engineer" jobs say nothing about
Unix/Linux at all, so you'll need to omit them.

So, in short, post the Linux Server Engineer position ONLY (of those three),
and specify the city, not just "SF Bay Area" -- otherwise your post will get
rejected again.

"

Hi, Karen. I'm writing back on behalf of the SVLUG listadmin team.

1. The SVLUG "Jobs" list reaches its own subscribers. It reaches
nobody else. The nature of the mailing list is described concisely
but fully at http://lists.svlug.org/lists/listinfo/jobs . You'll
want to read that page.

If you want to reach "other Linux user groups in Bay Area", that task's
entirely up to you. We listadmins just run a mailing list.

2. That page also suggests quite a number of other Bay Area online
places that might accept similar jobs postings. You'll want to consult
those other places' individual policies. We listadmins do not run those
other places. We just run a mailing list.

3. Although it's good that you say the second and third jobs are
"Linux-centric in that regard", their wording does not support the
notion of the jobs being Linux-centric. We go entirely by the wording
of submitted jobs postings. If they don't strike us as being "Unix- or
Linux-centric" as per the posted rules, we politely return them. They
then do not get posted.

In this case, the set of three jobs you attempted to post, if posted
again unchanged, will be (again) returned on that basis. If the jobs
actually do entail Linux duties that are not yet obvious from the
description text, you are most welcome to correct their wording
accordingly (to make clear that all three jobs are Unix- or
Linux-centric), and post that revision.

(The fact that the jobs are for a company "on Linux server" does not
make the jobs Linux-centric.)
