Yeah, for many years, people used to manipulate me because they knew
they could cleverly tie my hands by sending me deliberatly offlist
private mail as unexplained offshoots from public mailing list threads
-- because I was then known to regard it as (without exception)
ethically questionable to post in public what had been private.

After years of this bullsh**, I simply got tired of being gamed.  

If a poster (1) has no legitimate reason for suddenly going private,
and (2) doesn't even bother to justify it, _nowadays_ I'll often respond
back to the mailing list with prefatory remark "Moved back on-list" 
(or such).
