I don't know a _lot_ about it. It's a Web-based front-end to git repos
(thus, like GitHub in that sense). The Wikipedia page says the codebase
was originally written in Ruby, with some parts later rewritten in Go.
So, at least it's not yet another PHP nightmare. ;->
The sponsoring company relies on an 'open core' business model to make
money, e.g., I assume that various value-add goodies get merged into the
proprietary 'GitLab Enterprise Edition' but not the MIT Licensed GitLab
Community Edition. (My quick reading suggests that all of the
Go-language rewrites were for the Enterprise Edition.)
There are doubtless also open-source rivals to GitLab CE.
