Quoting Marc MERLIN (marc_news at merlins.org):
> True, but this can be done for everyone at the list level, saves time.
It is done for everyone at the mailing list level if and only if the
problem becomes significant in noise level, obnoxiousness, or duration
relative to the mailing list as a whole. But not otherwise. Otherwise,
SVLUG hopes and expects people to behave like adults. Which actually
works, with extremely infrequent exceptions. I believe a grand total of
four people have over a decade been put each on a two-week moderated
status. None has ever been kicked off. That includes the most recent
idiot, who has not been banned. (I predict he'll permaban himself
through inertia, by failing to send the required and appropriate
apology.)
Quoting policy (http://www.svlug.org/policies/list-policy.php):
SVLUGs' listadmins normally intervene only to ensure lists' technical
operation, to halt spam (incontrovertible spam, not postings someone
merely dislikes), and to halt major eruptions of offtopic spew.
Which is what I did.
Enforcement if any should always be minimal and public.
Which is what I did.
(We don't do backroom politics...
Not after the (metaphorical) ritual cleaning that we had during the
Andrew Fife administration, where we ended that bullshit for good.
... and our preferred means of social control is to help
everyone apply his/her own well-tuned killfile.)
Which is what Steve Litt just now suggested. So, as the Aussies say,
good on ya, mate!
You are always welcome to discuss that and any other policy issues on
SVLUG's public Volunteers mailing list. [link]
I politely suggest that, if further discussion is warranted, it be on
SVLUG's public Volunteers mailing list.
