I'm a fan of XFCE.  It's a nice and well integrated DE - but also pretty 
no-frills, and pretty light-weight.  I switched to it when KDE moved to 
v4 a bunch of years ago, and have been a happy customer ever since.

I've also kicked the tires on LXDE and definitely feel that that would 
be my next choice, should XFCE suddenly start to disappoint me.  Very 
similar feel, very similar strengths.

If both of those had jumped the shark for one reason or another, my next 
choice would probably be either FluxBox or OpenBox.
