For forwarding to off-system, it's been deprecated for a long time,
for the reason you cite and also other individually compelling ones,
e.g., even when not hammered by spammers, the way mail gets handled

Both /etc/aliases and ~/.forward has the same problem, in this area.

A mailing list manager, for some such applications (but not for others).
Sorry about the inconvenience: Lots of Internet conveniences have been
killed by the spam war. Open relays were convenient in their day, too.
