Well, I finally figured this out (somewhat) with some help. When I
started to get the following errors in my log:
Dec 23 02:51:10 mail postfix/smtp[1888]: 5F9FC120EB4:
to=<srs0=ddutwn=bi=roguehorse.com=linux at yourhostingaccount.com>,
relay=mail.yourhostingaccount.com[65.254.254.58]:25, delay=102014,
delays=102008/0.01/5.9/0, dsn=4.0.0, status=deferred (host
mail.yourhostingaccount.com[65.254.254.58] refused to talk to me: 554
walimpinc14 bizsmtp Connection rejected. Reverse DNS for
104.131.129.178 does not exist.)
I looked up rDNS and came across a few articles about setting up a PTR
record at my hosting account to resolve. Before doing that though, I
set up a mail account with the hosting company identical to the
account I was setting up on Postfix figuring it would catch any
replies that didn't make it back to the Postfix server. In doing so,
this created the rDNS necessary for the system to work.
So if I hadn't been able to create that email account at the hosting
company, I would have needed to ask them to set up a PTR record for me
or set up rDNS for mail sent to the account to find the IP of the
Postfix server? Is it normal for hosting companies NOT to
automatically set up rDNS records?
