Hi Kevin,

Yes, as Darlene says, the bailiff rules the courtroom, but the Judge sets the
rules. I once sat through a very high profile murder trial in the Hayward
Superior Court. And the Judge actually let an individual film much of the trial
to be used in a documentary about the murder. One thing is for certain, once
court is in session, no talking, no noise of any kind, no moving around, and no
leaving or entering the court.

Another issue you might want to consider is getting into the courtroom. Courtrooms
are generally quite small with very limited seating. If it is a proceeding where
a lot of folks are interested, it might be difficult to get in. The bailiff decides
who gets in and who doesn't in such a case. If you suspect it might be difficult to
get in, then getting there early and standing at the door might be your best bet.

At that murder trial in Hayward, there was a huge crowd attempting to get in when
the jury came back with verdicts. The vast majority of folks didn't get in. I was
the last person to get in for the jury verdicts. The bailiff came out and said they
could squeeze 10 members of the press in. And I just got at the end of the line and
walked right in. The bailiff knew I wasn't with the press. But he let me in, because
he knew I sat through much of the trial. I'll never forget that day in that court.
It was intense, real life drama.

enjoy,
Karen
