The old standard was that mail would be queued and retried for up to 4 days.  This is no longer a safe assumption.  Many originating MTAs only queue and retry for few hours before dropping the message as undeliverable.  It is the MX MTAs that are now expected to a) be available and b) have the multi-day queues.  Which makes sense as it puts the onus on the end that is most intimately affected and carries the primary costs.

Which might explain why (in the cases I care more about than my personal mail) I tend to have multiple geographically separated secondary MXes and to configure my secondary MXes with multi-week maximum queue periods.  That way when things SNAFU, I can take my time to recover properly and then just ETRN the secondaries to safely get everything I missed.
