After several vacations where I didn't have mail because the DSL
went down on our home server and there was no way to restart things
remotely, I moved my important email domains to a hosting service.
Mail came in to the hosting service and sat there in a spool file,
then I used fetchmail to suck it down to my local machine (either
home or travel laptop).
Michael, don't count on mail servers continuing to re-transmit for a
week. When my DSL went down while I was out of town, I generally
found after 3-4 days I started losing mail and getting dropped from
mailing list because of bounces, if I didn't find a friend willing
to host my domain for me temporarily.
I wished I had a setup where I could host my own website from my
home server most of the time, but easily switch over to another
host, at least for email, in case of emergency. When Michael posted
his original query I thought that was what he meant by "Eskimo North
acts as a backup mail spooler for me," but now I think he's asking
for exactly what I wanted so I'm not sure what the original comment
about a backup mail spooler meant.
It should be possible to have the website for yourdomain.com
on one host, but temporarily switch the MX record to point to
another host; but I think you would have to do it on your primary
and secondary DNS servers, which means you have to be using DNS
servers that offer that level of control.
...Akkana (now on a VPS at prgmr.com, making the question moot)
