[svlug] FreeRadius High Level Overview

I'm trying to wrap my head around the concept - Wikipedia and 
freeradius.org quickly devolve into an alphabet soup. So, far I've been 
able to figure out that I want a Linux client to use it in the simplest 
of configurations. The client has radclient installed with authorder set 
to radius, local

I think I am doing this: EAP -> PAP -> MD5 or plain text pwd

Is this the right concept?

Assuming the setup is correct (which it is not), do I just ssh 
username at client and expect the radius server (pfsense with freeradius2 
package) be consulted before falling back to "local"? Radius server logs 
show nothin so I know the server is not being consulted.

I am not asking anyone to resolve my particular setup, there are too 
many variables I am playing with and I kinda want to go through the 
discovery adventure. What I am asking is do I have the high-level 
concept right?
