Sounds like the main problem is an unresponsive keyboard.   If it were me,
I'd reboot and enable "magic sysrq" keys, if you haven't already done so.
Then

startx

alt-sysrq-r


alt-sysrq-r has helped me  in similar situations several times, not to
mention all the times the full R-E-I-S-U-B has saved me from the clutches
of fsck.
