When I do the "wget http://localhost/"

It reads the home page of the default web site and and stores it into an 
index.html file, so authentication response.

Yes, I have restarted apache after making the change to point the 
demo.solomomenu.com to the unprotected directory.

Yes, the changes have (really just one change noted above) was/were done 
on the same machine. No site was moved from one server to another.
