Rick,
I'll add my $0.02, never shy to open my big mouth...lol
I often agree with your view, and I certainly see your point.
7-8 years ago it was certainly like a Red Hat Enterprise Server
fest, in most cases corporations that used Linux would insist on
using it. I have had to use it in the past, when I would have
preferred to use another distro, but you know...money is green.
I see things changing as I know you must also, and Ubuntu is
more pallettable for me, as it is based on Debian.
I had a small job a month or two back and it was using OpenSuse,
so I needed to use it, but I was working on Debian much of the
time as that is what was on my laptop.
While there are minor differences, the best engineers know how
to use most of them and can on a whim.
I just installed 12 servers with Ubuntu 10.04, and a laptop. It
works well, but it's Debian...the only advantage of Ubuntu for
me is that you can get unstable packages, so it's a win-win
where you don't need to fight with the "do I stay on stable, or
move to testing or unstable" dilemna.
At the end of the day, it's all good...it's good that folks are
putting on installfests, it's good that some offer more, but
it's even good that people are offering less, IMO.
I also see Bill's point, and see nother wrong with people being
enthusiastic over a specific release, for better or worse, they
are holding it on their own time so it does give them some say
in what they do.
More so, I appreciate that you have always been neutral to the
distribution, and have helped with whatever version people need,
even *BSD. There was a time when a person REALLY benifited from
having someone help them install, but the distros have gotten so
much better at install, that even Debian can be installed by a
Grandmother...:-/
