A lot of people speak highly of "JavaScript: The Good Parts" by Dougie Crockford
If you only have room for one book on C, I like "C Programming: A Modern Approach, 2nd Edition" by K. N. King - It's pricey, but worth it.
(If you search for this wrong, Amazon will also offer you "Burger King Deluxe Latex Mask by Rubies", so be sure you're one-clicking on the right product).
For a Java book, there is so much to cover, and so many alternatives, pick an author who writes in a style you like, and covers the optional material you want. You can get that by reviewing the table of contents, and extracts from the book, at Amazon.

Peter
