Do you think a VPN connection is going to stay up reliably
24/7 as this is going to require? I have set up only one once
before and it was quite slow across different ISP networks. I
remember editing code across it and it taking sometimes 30
seconds to just save a source code file when the Save button
on Quanta was pressed.

In fact, the machines were only a few blocks apart, but one
was on the phone company's network and the other on the cable
company. It finally proved unusable for just editing code
files. But then again, I'm not at expert at configuring VPNs
so maybe it was my fault.
