The quotation is a brief point about how few active members a successful
LUG requires, from the Linux User Group HOWTO, which I maintain for the
Linux Documentation Project.
Cited article is a pretty good one, and originates from the UK. Author
Graham Morrison mentions that UK and Irish LUGs quite often solve the
venue problem by meeting in a local pub, where landlords are often glad
to help LUGs including letting them use private rooms, to get extra
business on what otherwise might be a quiet night.
As a said when you posted this link to SF-LUG's list, it's a pity this
can't work in the USA, on account of dumb liquor laws: We don't want to
shut out the underage, or adults under 21. Unfortunately, "pub" around
here just means a bar with Euro-aspirations.
It also tends to mean a bar with a television blaring from every corner,
which is another difference. The only local exception I know of is the
upstairs room at Fibbar McGee's on S. Murphy Street, downtown Sunnyvale.
