There's no Xfree*.log file, but there is Xorg.0.log
Which has entries that seem to indicate 1024 x 768 may be the
maximum this machine can do. It lists possible modes and that
is the last one listed.
Further down the file after describing possible modes, which
1024 x 768 being the highest it goes through a whole of of
what look like attempts at different modes.
Also in this file is this entry:
VESA VBE: S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR Family BIOS

root at sevans-WB1:/var/log# X -probeonly -verbose
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.
(WW) xf86CloseConsole: KDSETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor
(WW) xf86CloseConsole: VT_GETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor
(WW) xf86OpenConsole: VT_GETSTATE failed: Bad file descriptor
root at sevans-WB1:/var/log#
Also got this:
root at sevans-WB1:/var/log# lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8
KM266/KL266]
So now I see it's a ProSavage8, and I'll Google around for
that and see what I can find.
Much thanks!
