Are you running a firewall, (iptables, etc.,) and blocking multicast
IPs? Turn off avahi in the admin menu?

Ubuntu uses the avahi multicast service, and rumors have it that it is
used for printer discovery on the LAN.

Just guessing, but it that's the problem antagonize the google by
searching for avahi and printer.
