Isn't this connected to a dedicated television in your living room or
What could you possibly want to use it for on a daily basis other than
that, that you'd want to bloat it up?

You're not going to make it a db/web server. 
You certainly don't want to try experimental programs on it once you
finally do get it all working.
You're not going to do any real work on it as the resolution just isn't
there on a TV/Plasma/LCD etc.
It needs to be running MythTV 24/7 so it can record your shows and
transcode and strip out commercials and all that stuff.
You might occasionally play video games on it.

it makes a great file server/mp3/samba to store stuff since it's always
on and on the LAN, but you don't need anything more than samba for that.

Computers are so cheap, it's best to just dedicate a box to the HTPC
experience and optimize it for that. Especially if you want to start
watching Blueray movies or have multiple recording streams.

IMHO anyways.

i know that one. however, i want to run a full fledged Ubuntu for other
