I guess it depends on the case.
My MythTV server has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 and the CPU cores are
around 75 deg F when idle. That's pretty much room temperature. They
barely get to 100 F when playing 1080p, and that's with software
de-interlacing enabled (I need to figure out how to send 1080i to HDMI
and let the TV deal with it). I'm using the cooler that came with the
CPU. The "smart" power saving mumbo-jumbo is enabled everywhere (BIOS
and operating system).
The Gigabyte GA-M78SM-S2H motherboard has a GeForce 8200 chip on it
that's passively cooled.
The system has only one hard-drive and there are no cards plugged into
the motherboard (but that will change when I get the DVB-S card).
One day I'll put a power meter on it, but until then, my guess is the
system is actually pretty "green". :-)
The only thing I need to change is the power supply. The current one is
very cheap and quite noisy (not very efficient either, I guess). I need
to upgrade that, but it's not high priority.
