the big void i see is "device drivers" that actually work with
the latest greatest hardware.  it doesn't matter if it is for
linux or *bsd drivers. and one should be able to boot without
using lilo/grub/loadlin/etc, how fast one can boot and run itself
in memory only, can sometimes makes all the difference in the world a
for the embedded boxes, to be able to completely boot everything in 5 seconds
