Hi James,
First of all I want to say that Alvin has a lot of good ideas in his response.
Additionally, you might check the system administration job descriptions at
Sage:
http://www.sage.org/field/
There's a lot of formal thought put into those job descriptions and there is
a progression from junior through senior levels. The descriptions are "big"
and a real job may not encompass all of the duties in the Sage job
description.
You wrote, "Most helpful in this will be something from HR types who
understand the job." You would be a privileged man if you worked in a place
where HR actually understood technical work. Such an HR department is rare.
But what I hear in your message is that you would like objectivity and
realism in the job description and in comparing it to the job you've been
doing. If you give management the job description you run the risk of them
discounting the credibility of the description. If HR gives it to them there
may be more credibility. You might want to take the Sage material to HR and
make your case.
All of that is a shame. It's part of management's job to maintain awareness of
jobs, job descriptions, and the industry.
Anyway, good luck and I hope things aren't too stressful.
