Interesting, so what if you do this:

fdisk -l /dev/sda

and the same for sdb.

BTW, some usb sticks require you to mount the entire device instead of a 
partition like so:

mount /dev/sda /mnt/usbkey

Also, can you post your kernel .config file?  Maybe just put it somewhere we 
can grab it instead of posting it in the email though.
