There was a big discussion about this recently on the Boston Linux
User group list. I will forward the thread along which explains
exactly why dd will fail on encrypted DVD discs...

No problem dude. I think what you missed, or I didn't explain
properly, is that mediabuntu is a special repository that you need to
add to your APT configuration. However, the wiki link I sent shows
that you can just execute a one time shell script already present in
default Ubuntu installation which will allow you to get encrypted DVD
read support installed...
