smartctl from smartmontools (at sourceforge, and in distros) will tell
you what the drive itself says, if the drive and BIOS support and have
enabled SMART. You can use it to tell the disk to run different
self-tests etc.

The smart thing is to run smartd from the same source, have it do
periodic tests and email you if there is trouble.

Here's a howto for forcing the disk to reallocate sectors if there are
errors in the smartctl report:
