At one time, I had an elaborate theory which involved setting things
up in a bunch of equally-sized partitions all LVM'ed together, but not
having a single filesystem spanning all of it. At the time I was
doing RAID1 but considering RAID5, so my theory was that I could add
the spare space to LVM and free up enough space to remove a partition
pair, then convert that partition pair to be part of a RAID5 device,
which would be added back to LVM thus freeing up another partition
pair, etc.

I never did that, and these days I don't use RAID at all (I use
rsnapshot mirroring for backup and I don't have strong uptime needs).
