I'm a little confused. Why would you want swap on a drive if you are not
installing a GNU Linux OS on it? (Of course you wouldn't want to install an
OS on an external HD, AFAIK). The other odd thing is that you are not using
the HD for data. May I ask what you are using it for?

Depends on why you want swap. The general rule of thumb that everyone has
told me is that you should double the amount of installed RAM, but that is
if you are using the drive for an OS, which you have said you are not doing.
I am a relatively simple end user, though, and so I am probably missing
something really obvious.
