Good news, I took your suggestion and now have the machine booted  
with the card installed. Here is what I see in "dmesg" output  
relevant to the card:

Next challenge is to locate an appropriate driver. Is there any  
commands I can send the HBA to probe the device?

My friend has quite a few of these cards, as I mentioned. What might  
be a fair price that people could obtain one for? (I am sure he does  
not want to give them away!)
