I'm interested in Ubuntu's AutomatedTesting project:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/automated-testing
which looks like it will expand the sanity checking
that gets done for new packages. Just running a few
simple tests per package doesn't look like much, but
it does offer both Ubuntu and Debian the chance to,
in effect, use their huge collections of packages
("universe" in Ubuntu-speak) as test suites for the
fundamental stuff.
