Its true that Google deserves some recognition for resisting the  
attempt to get at the data, but they'd be a whole lot more friendly  
to user privacy if they didn't retain huge amounts of data  
indefinitely, thereby making it natural a target for subpoenas, etc.  
(including, I've heard, but not from a particularly reliable source,  
copies of every email ever sent through gmail).
