[svlug] recommended scanner(/printer)(/fax) combo?

I need a scanner that's supported under Linux by SANE so that I can
share it between the 2...3 systems on my home network (Linux and
Windows).
If it's a scanner/printer combo, even better, as it may replace my aging
Epson Stylus Photo 780 which every now and then throws a paper jam or
two. But then the whole combo must be supported under Linux/SANE.
Fax is optional but welcome if the price is reasonable.
Ah yes, the whole thing must be cheap. :-)

The combo will stay connected to an AMD64 server running Fedora 4 and
will be shared by a few systems running Linux and Windows.

So, can you recommend anything that's currently in the stores that
corresponds to the description? Something that Just Works, no issues. I
can tweak the drivers on the server if need be, but I don't want any
paper jams or things like that.

I've found a few HP combos recently that were on sale at Office Depot
for about $150 but they were awefully old and looked like discontinued
models. I don't want anything like that, I want to be able to purchase
cartridges for a few years down the road.
