[svlug] PCLinuxOS = OOPS!!!

I consider it CRITICAL to back up computer data regardless of O.S. .
Normally I stick with debian due to the theoretical advantages of the repository system , Specifically my users like MEPIS .
W98se still had the teatimer malware , as the removal tool hated w98 .
So I did a quick rebuild and a few weeks later my biggest other user informs me that the lack of ability to print out a .pdf file = catastrophe . [ don't let your users interact with "friends" who think horrid things like ".doc files" and .pdf's after version 3 are good things. Both are stupid disasters you should ban from your IT mix . ] So I quickly get us on PCLinuxOS.92 and we love it --- until today when I burn another daily data backup from it and try to read the dvd+rw on the box that still had teatimer before I started the rebuild.
Now I have all 6 backup sets burned by PCLinuxOS.92 except it announces success when it actually failed and I stopped trying to verify them as that has never worked unless ALL the data getting backed up comes from / , vs our situation where most comes from the vfat [fat32 w98 partition].
Simply MEPIS suffered this before, I think. I believe it was caused by cdrdao deciding their future free versions would not handle dvd any more and k3b just keeps on using it as before - ignoring the C R I T I C A L change and failing.
I fervently hope nobody goes back to the old position of the burn button on k3b unless they really fix the underlying problem as users would lose their clue that Promised functions wont work. I'm astonished Tex delivered a bad new k3b with his latest PCLinuxOS ;but, if a .deb distro ships a mistake maybe I shouldn't assume it got fixed before some .rpm distro used it. My attempts to use other backup tools did not satisfy all my criteria specifically the "easy enough so my users have a chance of getting it right if I'm unavailable". Because you need to meet that criteria for basic internal control , I'd have to classify Linux as "not ready for the corporate desktop" until it is fixed - not to imply that windows might meet that criteria. I should not have to test every distro's ability to make a readable data DVD+rw just to protect my users from what currently masquerades as final releases.
