I might be totally off here, but which version of X? Which
implementation (x.org or xfree86)? I've found a recurring problem with
x.org 7.0 where the server will crash on startup (and xinit will give
that useless error message) unless you pass '-nolisten tcp' to the X
server. (So "startx -- -nolisten tcp" should do it.)
