Don,

   I'm sure this is not as technical as you are perhaps looking for, but
it would seem to me the major concern would be space not place.  Meaning
by this I would put it on the largest drive partition.  If you are using
a single partition then perhaps /swp?  

   Again since I too haven't come across hard data on this it would seem
that the only concern is that you don't want it someplace where it could
grow so large it fills up a partition and halts the box.
