Dan, I just downloaded Knoppix 4.0 from the download click'ie on
http://www.knoppix.net/, via ftp by choosing ftp.kernel.org, (near the
bottom-its in California, and a good quick connection-ran 6M
bits/sec.,) and Knoppix 4.0 has had some stuff added, but most of the
programs from 3.X seems to have been carried forward. Recent version
of KDE, (the automount for a flash pen plops up a pen icon on the
desktop,) has UNIONFS, 2.6.12 kernel, OOF is 2.0 Beta, and recent, (I
don't know which ones,) Firefox, Thunderbird, and, Mozilla, emacs 21.
I didn't install it, just booted to the live CD, no Boot: arguments,
and it seems to have detected everything, (including the Hauppauge
WinTV card on the PCI buss,) a somewhat modern ATI Rage, an antique
Yamaha sound card, and a 1024x768 monitor connected to the ATI, (which
it correctly identified,) and a Linux swap partition on the IDE,
(which I didn't know was there.) 128 MB, circa 1996 junk box, Pentium
antique, (but claimed it was a 348 MHz.)
Sound/Internet/TV came up with no configuration, (after telling xawtv
that it was NTSC, when prompted, and it came up on Channel 2, with
video and audio.)
Kind of painless for such an old machine running through an old KVM; I
didn't know what was in it until I watched it boot, (other than the
TV, which I slipped in to try to fool it,) ... FYI, Dan.
If I get a chance, I'll stuff it into one of the Adaptec/Fujutsu SCSI
machines and see how it does after things slow down late this PM.
