Knoppix runs without a HD, in 256M and probably has the best HW
detection, which might be an issue with hand-me-downs. Comes with
Firefox and Thunderbird.

Ubuntu is good to, and will run in less than 256, but boot is
substantially slower. Good HW detection and comes with either Mozilla
or Firefox/Thunderbird, depending on version. If you need a lot of
CDs, the Ubuntu folks will ship CDs, but I don't know how long they
will take to get here.

Since it would be a CD only, you probably need no configuration since
the Inet configuration is automatic for DHCP. No FW would be
necessary, either. So, it might be a plop-n-play.
