My "linux laptop" is an old Sony Vaio PCG-FX190k. One really nice
thing about it is that it has a 1400x1050 display. Unfortunately, this
display has started acting up lately.
When cold, the display has a distinct reddish hue. No big problem as
it goes away once the display warms up. Once the display warms up
beyond a certain point, however, it starts developing "snow" as if the
XF86Config file is wrong. These problems do seem to be thermally
related.
Is there a good place for laptop repair in the South Bay (or Santa
Cruz)?
Failing that, what are the current notebooks that do well as a dual
boot Linux and Windows machine that have a reasonably large number of
pixels, and ideally will run dual headed?

There are three types of documentation: tutorial, mnemonic and misleading.
