[svlug] Putting usb-connected hard drives in standby/sleep mode.

I have some old/loud hard drives lying around, so I picked up a USB
enclosure. Which worked very well for getting access without opening
cases and the like.

Unfortunately, it won't let me use hdparm to put the drive in
power-saving mode. And, as I mentioned, it's somewhat loud (yes, the
drive, not the enclosure). Since it's USB, I can certainly hotplug
and power it off, but I was wondering if there was a better way?

["It" in this case is Redhat 7.3, hdparm v4.6, kernel 2.4.18-27.7.x.
I'd upgrade all of it, but I really haven't seen any hints that it
would then work.]

Thanks,
scott
