[svlug] mc -- temporary file location / behavior

I've been a growing fan of mc (midnight commander, a norton
commander-like ncurses shell for file management). Particularly with
the remote shell / FTP and other virtual filesystem support.

I'm also a fan of keeping general system partitions relatively small,
with a 250 MiB /tmp partition.

This turned into a problem when attempting to transfer a CD ISO image
across my LAN recently. I found that mc was first copying the file to
/tmp, then sending it. Or dying trying.

Questions:

  - Can this "copy before send" behavior be toggled?

  - Can the temporary file storage location be modified?

Several passes through the interactive documentation and manpage don't
show a ready answer.

Peace.
